A New Matan Torah

By: Rabbi Yitzchak Lerner

The first line in Pirkei Avos screams out for interpretation. It says: " Moshe Kibel Torah M' Sinai". Moses received torah FROM Sinai. What does "From" Sinai mean. Either it should say Moses received torah from the G-d or Moses received Torah "At" Sinai. Why then does it say "from Sinai"?

There is a famous midrash that may shed light on this Mishna. The midrash says that all of the great and high mountains came to G-d and asked that the Torah be given on them. In the end though, G-d chose a small mountain, Sinai, to give his holy Torah. Why? The midrash is telling us that bigger isn't always better - in fact someone who appears smaller, with a sense of humility has the qualities to receive the Torah.

Moshe understood this from where G-d was to give his holy Torah and received this message of Humility FROM Sinai. In truth, in order to be one to receive Torah you need to have this quality. Arrogance and Torah do not make a good shidduch.

Now to the title of my dvar Torah; We understand that Yom Kippur is a day of Matan Torah.

Firstly, from where do we see this? When Moshe returned to the Jewish people with the second set of Luchos it was on Yom Kippur. Our Rabbis tell us that this was like a Matan Torah.

The Jewish people spent the month of Elul plus another ten days doing tshuva before Moshe came down. At the same time Moshe was on Har Sinai understanding the thirteen character traits of Hashem, we were all involved in working on ourselves and humbling ourselves from our mistakes in front of the master of the world. Once Hashem saw this - he sent Moshe down with the new set of luchos. It was in fact a new Matan Torah brought about by our humility.

May we all be zocheh to work on this middah in order to be worthy of seeing a final redemption speedily in our days.

Good Shabbos amd Gmar chasima tova.
