This Week at Midreshet

It's been a bittersweet week as we bid farewell to our beloved Shana Bet students; Shayna, Sarah, Danielle, Blanche, Eliana, Sophie and Aliza. On Monday we had a farewell ceremony and the girls were addressed by Rabbi Berglas, Vicky, Rav Eitan, and Leora Bednarsh. Each of the girls spoke as well, through tears and laughter, words of Torah and thanks. They thanked their fellow shana bet students (it's not goodbye!) and inspired the shana alef girls. We will miss them all so much!

Our shana aleph girls enjoyed a short intersession break as they wrapped up the first semester and have all worked hard on making their schedules for second semester with an array of new classes on offer.

Wishing everyone a great Shabbat and hoping the coming semester will bring much growth, knowledge and inspiration.

And Now…The Sequel

Mrs. Fagie Reves

With Sefer Shemot we open a new chapter in Bnei Yisrael's history. Soon to be redeemed, Bnei Yisrael can begin to fulfill their divine destiny, but first they must find their identity as a nation.

The Ramban calls Bereishit the "Sefer HaYitzira", the book of creation, as it describes the physical creation of the world and the birth of many individuals who will be the spiritual backbone of the future nation. There are promises that a new nation will come from these individuals but it does not become a reality in Bereishit.

Shemot is the Book of the People- it is where we are called 'Bnei Yisrael' for the first time, where we are no longer just 12 individual sons of Yaakov but a large nation that comes from him. Parshat Shemot famously begins with a list of those who came down to Egypt with Yaakov. In essence, the first few pesukim of Shemot are a flashback to the end of Bereishit when Yaakov's sons come down to Egypt. Rashi asks: "What was the purpose of repeating the list of who comes down, why not just starts this new chapter in BNY's history with the enslavement?" Rashi's famous answer is that Hashem loves to count us to show his love for us. But I think that one reason we need that list, is to connect Bereishit to Shemot, to have us understand that Shemot is not a book that stands on its own, but rather, is a sequel to Bereishit, the next chapter in the history of Bnei Yisrael.

A name is your identity and it is crucial to understand where we come from, to understand that this nation at its core is from Yaakov and must reflect his values on their journey and  it is also a hint that Bnei Yisrael are about to embark on a search for their identity as a nation. Until now they have just been individuals, now, in the next chapter they will start to build themselves as a nation and the first few pesukim remind us that as they search, they must not forget that essentially they are from Yaakov. That must be what guides them on their road to become a new nation.

Shabbat Shalom!
